May It Please Your Excellency,
We, Mahatma Gandhi National Foundation,Kerala,most humbly submit that national awards like Padma Vibhushan,Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri should not be devalued by giving them to undeserving individuals of dubious backgrounds.
At present most of the leading nations in the world honour distinguished citizens through titles of deference in recognition of the meritorious services they have rendered to the people.These awards,announced on the Republic Day reaffirm their just claim to be role models and the selection process is expected to be transparent and faultless.
But we are sorry to state that of late, a few selections have been faulty since some of the awardees are not worthy to be emulated. For example the Cricket supremo Padma Shri Sachin Thendulkar’s act of importing the gift car without paying the tax,gave rise to wide spread criticism.The music wizard Padma Shri A.R.Rahman’s house was recently raided by the Income Tax Department. Prohibition is said to be one of the Directive Principles of state policy.Still the cine actor Padma Shri Mohanlal appears in ad films promoting liquor.
Another pertinent point is that certain top brass officials of the Central Government,who have been associated with the selection process are selected as Padma awardees.This seems to be contrary to the code of propriety.
We also would like to point out that there are awards for excellence of national stature is almost all fields such as Jnana Peet in literature,Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award in arts,Phalke Award and National film Award in filmdom and Khel Ratna,Arjuna and Dronachariya Awards in sports and games.So we would suggest that an additional award should not be given to excellence in the same field and that such people should not be considered for Padma Awards.
We therefore beg to submit that more care should be taken in selecting the Padma awardees since they are supposed to be role models for future generations.
